MTV announced the relaunch of Unplugged in May 2009, which brought the series to a new generation through MTV.com. The six-episode series featured artists including Adele, Paramore, and Katy Perry. At the time, Perry shared that “I really wanted to do MTV Unplugged, obviously, because it has such a great history of showing off really who the person is … You get to hear the real story of the songs, which is important to me.”

She continued: “Some people have an idea who I am, a little piece of the cake, but I get to show off really more. I have a larger-than-life personality and my clothes reflect that. For MTV Unplugged, I wanted to be a mixture of Stevie Nicks and a fairy!”

Her performance, recorded live at at NEP Midtown Studios in New York, New York, featured acoustic versions of “I Kissed a Girl,” “Ur So Gay,” “Thinking of You,” “Waking Up in Vegas,” and “Lost.” She also played the unreleased song “Brick By Brick” and covered Fountains of Wayne’s “Hackensack.” “I Kissed a Girl,” “Thinking of You,” and “Waking Up in Vegas,” were three of the four released singles from One of the Boys, all making the U.S. Top 40.
