Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult, who exited the role due to scheduling conflicts.
Kit Harington has joined the cast of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, replacing Nicholas Hoult in the role. Hoult, who was initially announced for the character on Aug. 12, was released from his deal after conflicts with two preexisting projects made his participation unfeasible. Harington previously voiced Lockhart in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, released in late 2025.
The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, with author J.K. Rowling serving as an executive producer. The show’s first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, debuts Dec. 25 on HBO and HBO Max, with season 1 showrunner Francesca Gardiner joined by newly promoted co-showrunner Jon Brown for the already confirmed second season.
