Kyle Gass of Tenacious D addresses the backlash from his Trump assassination joke

Kyle Gass of Tenacious D has spoken out for the first time since making a controversial joke about assassinating former President Donald Trump. In an interview, Gass admitted, “It was terrible judgment, obviously. I’ve felt terrible ever since, because it’s such a responsibility to not screw up like that.”

The joke happened during a Tenacious D concert in Sydney on July 14, 2024, which was also Gass’ 64th birthday. When asked to make a wish onstage, he quipped, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” just a day after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

As the comments spread online, Jack Black, Gass’ bandmate, expressed his shock, stating he was “blindsided” and emphasized that he does not support hate speech or political violence. Following the incident, Black announced that the rest of the band’s tour dates would be canceled.

Gass later issued an apology on Instagram but decided to delete it after a few days. He explained, “It looked like a dead fish just laying there. I really did apologize, but I took it down because it’s out there.”

Regarding his relationship with Black, Gass said, “We hashed it out. It was hard. It is like a marriage. You go through these ups and downs.”

Looking ahead, Gass is optimistic about the future of Tenacious D, declaring, “It’s gonna be bigger than Oasis!
