Happy Birthday to Corey Glover of Living Colour!

Corey Glover was born on this day, November 6, back in 1964, in Brooklyn, New York City. Glover is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and actor. He was the lead vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning rock band Living Colour since 1985.

Music career

Glover began his music career in the early 1980s, performing with and in various local bands. In 1985, he was recruited by guitarist Vernon Reid to join Living Colour, reportedly after Reid witnessed Glover singing “Happy Birthday” at a friend’s party.

The band found immediate success with the release of their debut album Vivid in 1988. The album generated the hit singles “Cult of Personality” and “Glamour Boys.” It was certified double platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). Vivid was also one of the most popular albums of 1988, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.

Living Colour released five more studio albums, Time’s Up (1990), Stain (1993), Collideøscope (2003), The Chair in the Doorway (2009), and Shade (2017). The band has also released five live albums, five compilation albums, and two EP’s.

In the mid-90’s, Living Colour split-up. Glover adapted the name Reverend Daddy Love and began a solo career. He released several solo albums including Hymns (1998) and The Pledge (2012). Glover has also toured as the vocalist for the funk band Galactic.

In 2018, Corey teamed up with legendary guitarist George Lynch, drummer Chris Moore, and bassist Pancho Tomaselli to form the group Ultraphonix. They released their lone album Original Human Music that same year.

Glover also helped form the metal project called Disciples of Verity, with Corey Pierce (God Forbid), George Pond (Negative Sky), Zack Miranowic (Sekond Skyn), and Mark Monjoy (Sekond Skyn). They released their lone album Pragmatic Sanction in 2020.

Acting Career

Glover began his acting career in the mid 1980s. He appeared in the 1986 Oliver Stone war film Platoon as Francis. It’s about a young soldier traumatized by the war. He also starred in the short-lived television series Signs of Life (1989).

Awards and Honors

Glover has won two Grammy Awards. The first one was for Best Hard Rock Performance for Living Colour’s song “Cult of Personality” (1989). The second one was for Best Hard Rock Performance for their song “Time’s Up” (1991).

I have been fortunate to see Living Colour live several times over the years. The first being at WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium in 2013. It was CM Punk Vs. The Undertaker. Living Colour played CM Punk’s entrance theme “Cult of Personality” live as he made his way to the ring in front of close to 75,000 fans.

Years later, I saw Corey and the fellas live at Ardmore Music Hall and again at the MMR*B*Q.

Glover was also a “Stowaway” on this year’s Shiprocked Cruise. He stole the show every time he hit the stage.

Living Colour is on the road in Europe touring in support of the 30th anniversary of the release of their third studio album Stain for the rest of 2023. They will hit the road early in 2024 to embark on the next leg of their North American tour with Extreme. It will stop at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, NJ on January 27th, 2024.
