Mariah Carey has revealed a suite of new editions of her tenth album The Emancipation Of Mimi, in celebration of the record’s 20th-anniversary.
The new editions come as a 45-track 5LP box set and a 40-track digital deluxe edition. It combines the original album with tracks from its subsequent Platinum Edition; new remixes from Kaytranada, Desert Storm, and Esentrik; demos; live performances; acapellas; instrumentals; and edits. The reissues also feature a never-before-released track, “When I Feel It,” a Mahogany Beatz track recorded for The Emancipation of Mimi but ultimately unreleased due to clearance issues with its sample of The Dynamic Superiors’ “Here Comes That Feeling.”
Released in 2005, The Emancipation Of Mimi marked Carey’s first record since 1997’s Butterfly to debut at the top of the Billboard Top 200—its centerpiece track and most enduring hit, “We Belong Together,” remained atop the Hot 100 for 14 weeks. The album ultimately became the best-selling record 2005 in the U.S., and the second best-selling in the world—in 2006, it earned Carey eight Grammy nominations including Album Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. Recently certified 7x platinum by the RIAA, The Emancipation Of Mimi has since sold over 15 million copies globally.
Carey will discuss the making of the record—and the new editions—during a Spotify Listening Party on Monday, June 2nd. Moderated by veteran NYC Hot 97 host Nessa, the event will include a Q&A, where listeners can submit questions for Carey and listen along to the record. She’s also in the midst of the international The Celebration Of Mimi tour, which has included a 24-date Vegas residency and recent stadium shows in Shenzhen and Shanghai, China.
“Twenty years ago, I was facing a crossroads in my career,” Carey wrote in the liner notes to the record’s 20th-anniversary box set. “The Emancipation Of Mimi was more than just an
album title; it was a declaration of artistic freedom. Twenty years later, I celebrate this album with all of you. Thank you for embracing this chapter of my story, for believing in the music, and for always allowing me to be me.”
