Mastodon to Record Studio Version of Iconic Black Sabbath Hit Following Ozzy Osbourne Tribute Concert

Mastodon is set to record their own version of Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut.” The band announced this exciting news while at Bloodstock Open Air, where they performed the song as part of the Back To The Beginning tribute to Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath. Drummer Brann Dailor confirmed to Bloodstock TV, “We’re definitely recording it.” Since the tribute show, Mastodon has included the track in their nightly setlist.

The Back To The Beginning event took place on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park stadium in Birmingham, England. It attracted an impressive 40,000 fans in person, with another 5.8 million tuning in via live stream. Dailor shared that the band had six months to prepare for the tribute, calling it “the honor of a lifetime.” He added, “It’s better than anything that anybody could ever bestow upon you to be called upon by the giant oak tree that is Black Sabbath.”

The July show featured performances from heavyweights like Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Lamb of God, and Anthrax. Ozzy kicked off the night with five songs alongside his solo band before reuniting with Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward for four classic tracks. At 76, Ozzy commanded the stage from a black throne, expressing his gratitude to the crowd: “You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The night concluded with a spectacular fireworks display and a heartfelt message: “Thank you for everything, you guys are f*cking amazing. Birmingham Forever.” The event also supported three important causes: Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice, with fans bidding on signed gear and rare items in an online auction.
