Modest Mouse has just released “Look How Far,” their first new song since 2021. The track features Janet Weiss on drums, known for her work with Sleater-Kinney. This single comes five years after their album The Golden Casket, which reached No. 7 on Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums chart. A new album is expected later this year, but the band hasn’t revealed any details yet.
In “Look How Far,” Isaac Brock sings, “I used to sleep in the branches / I used to slither in the grass / I can’t believe how long I’ve wanted to be living in the past.” He continues, “You say you’re related to ancient kings / Oh! And some czars / Why don’t you build a time machine and show them they’ve fallen just so far?” The song is just under two minutes long and marks a return to the raw sound of their earlier work.
This year is special for Modest Mouse as they celebrate their 30th anniversary. In February, they hosted their first Ice Cream Floats cruise, sailing from Miami to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The band performed two electric sets and an acoustic show, sharing the stage with artists like The Man, Kurt Vile and the Violators, and Built to Spill.
Modest Mouse will be touring this spring and summer, kicking off on May 12 in Spokane, Washington, and wrapping up on September 20 at Shaky Knees in Atlanta. They’ll also perform at San Francisco’s Outside Lands on August 7 and open for My Chemical Romance at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on August 18. Tickets go on sale March 13.
