We all have been guilty of judging someone by their taste in music, but it turns out, there’s more to our musical tastes than previously realized.

The Hill published a comprehensive article highlighting various scientific studies showing that someone’s taste in music can be reflective of their general personality. For example, one study found that people who are very empathetic tend to prefer “mellow music” of the R&B and soft rock genres, while more logic-based thinkers tend to prefer hard rock and heavy metal.

The Myers-Briggs 16 Personalities test also found links between genres and personality types. Those with a “Sentinel” personality have an appreciation for community and were most likely to be fans of country and religious music. Meanwhile, those with an “Explorer” personality thrive on energy and were most likely to be fans of electronica, hip-hop and pop music. Those with “Analyst” personalities have a strong appreciation for technical expertise and were most likely to be fans of rock, classical, jazz, punk and metal music.

So, while the saying of never judging a book by its cover might be true, it seems you can at least judge someone a little bit by their playlist.
