New Tom Petty Podcast ‘One on One’ Launches With Brandon Flowers of The Killers

The Tom Petty Estate debuted One on One: The Official Tom Petty Podcast on Tuesday, Oct. 13, with Brandon Flowers of The Killers as the first guest. The audio series honors the life and music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers across many episodes.

Matt Everitt hosts. The Tom Petty Estate commissioned the show, which traces Petty’s earliest years and then follows the band’s lasting pull on musicians working today.

Every episode brings in a famous fan who picks the one Tom Petty song that matters most to them. New interviews include Brandon Flowers, Brandi Carlile, Tony Hawk, Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs, Dhani Harrison, Lucinda Williams, Kevin Morby, and Margo Price. Benmont Tench, the original keyboardist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, joins in as well.

Several guests shared their thoughts in the announcement from the Tom Petty Estate. “It was straight to the heart, and it was in our language. Sometimes when you start a band, you think you’ve gotta be poetic and flowery… He would be the first person that I would say, ‘Listen to this. Look at how much he’s saying with so few words. And these are our words.'” Brandon Flowers said, as quoted by Screamer Magazine.

The launch lands during the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The band, which began in Florida, is best known for “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “American Girl,” and “Breakdown.” Petty also had a solo career, and “Free Fallin‘” is his most famous single. He died in October 2017, just before he turned 67.

A new box set, Origins 1971-1978, arrives Nov. 6 through UMe. It covers the band’s early years and its country, folk, punk, reggae, rock, and soul originals. Al Kooper, Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, and Emory Gordy are among the artists who play on it. Fans can pre-order it here.
