Nickelback Suggests Duet With Lizzo After Defending Their Music

Lizzo and Nickelback are sharing support for one another. Nearly four years after the “About Damn Time” singer praised Nickelback’s music in a 2019 interview, the Canadian rock band responded to her comments this week.

In the original clip, Lizzo, 34, gives her thoughts on songs that are a “jam or not a jam.” When she hears the band’s 2001 hit “How You Remind Me” she can’t help but to sing along. “It has a beautiful climax,” Lizzo said.

She then addressed the Nickelback hate. “Why do people not like Nickelback? I feel like Nickelback gets way too much s—. I think this is a jam.” Lizzo continued singing along to the song, even though she didn’t know all the words. She said everyone at least knows the melody. Then, the Detroit native has a theory as to why the band is always hated on.

“Because he (lead singer and guitarist Chad Kroeger) had a curly blond perm,” she said, referencing the vocalist’s memorable early aughts hairstyle. “That’s the only reason they get s—, because this is an amazing song.”

It seems the band hasn’t heard Lizzo’s praise until now because they just shared the clip this week. “Thank you Lizzo for the kind words!” wrote Nickelback on Instagram. The Canadian Music Hall of Fame members then offered to perform alongside the musician sometime. “Open invite any show any time… maybe see you in Houston this summer?”

Longtime Rock Fan

Nickelback is gearing up to kick off a summer tour in June. Lizzo is a known rock fan, and she covered German metal band Rammstein’s “Du Hast” twice during a recent tour stop in Berlin. She’s also previously toured with the alternative group HAIM.

As we previously reported, the Special star said that she was bullied in school for liking rock bands. “It was a Black school,” she told Vanity Fair in October. “Mostly Black and brown, Caribbean, I had Nigerian friends… They were all listening to what was on the radio: Usher, Destiny’s Child, Ludacris, and I was into Radiohead’s OK Computer. I kept it hidden, even when I was in a rock band, because I didn’t want to be made fun of by my peers – they’d yell, ‘White girl!’”
