Ólafur Arnalds Albums Headed to Vinyl

A selection of works by the Icelandic composer, musician, and producer Ólafur Arnalds are coming to vinyl. These albums include The Chopin Project, a collaborative reimagining of pieces by the Polish composer, the solo albums re:member and some kind of peace, as well as Arnalds’ BAFTA winning soundtrack of the British crime drama Broadchurch.

In 2015, Arnalds and German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott reimagined a series of pieces by Frédéric Chopin. The Chopin Project breathes new life into beloved classics and pairs them with original compositions by Arnalds.

For his fourth solo album, 2018’s re:member Arnalds composed music with the software Stratus, fusing technology and humanity. “This is my breaking out-of-a-shell album. It’s me taking the raw influences that I have from all these different musical genres and not filtering them,” Arnalds has said of re:member. “It explores the creative process and how one can manipulate that to get out of the circle of expectations and habit.” The new reissue arrives on blue and white splatter limited edition LP.

Arnald’s introspective 2020 record some kind of peace embarks on a personal journey using masterful sampling techniques. The album features collaborations with the Icelandic singer and multi-instrumentalist JFDR (“Back To the Sky”), the German singer-songwriter Josin (“The Bottom Line”), and British musician Bonobo (“Loom”). The latter two tracks were nominated for Grammy Awards in 2022, “Loom” for Best Dance/Electronic Recording and “The Bottom Line” for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals.

“All of these people were part of my life at that point or were with me in the experiences that influenced the album,” says Arnalds of his collaborators on some kind of peace. “It would be strange to write such a personal album and not include my friends.”

Arnald’s soundtracks for the UK hit crime series Broadchurch brought the composer critical acclaim, winning the BAFTA for Best Original Music in 2014. Broadchurch combines music from Seasons 1 and 2 while Broadchurch The Final Chapter is the complete soundtrack for the show’s third and final season.
