Producer Butch Vig recently shared his reflections on the lasting impact of Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind as it approaches its 35th anniversary this September. The RIAA Diamond-certified record transformed band members Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl into global stars while launching the 1990s grunge movement. Following Nevermind, Nirvana released In Utero in 1993 before disbanding in 1994 after Cobain’s death by suicide.
Vig noted that while he does not listen to the record at home, its presence remains omnipresent in public places like coffee shops. The album includes track hits such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom,” “Come as You Are,” and “Lithium,” as well as “Something in the Way,” which experienced a resurgence after being featured in the 2022 movie The Batman. Vig praised the album’s lasting connection with listeners, citing the power, energy, and mystery in Kurt Cobain’s vocal performance.
