Queen is throwing a party to celebrate what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 80th birthday. The Official Freddie Mercury Birthday Party 2026 will take place on September 5 at the Casino Barrière in Montreux, Switzerland. The event is called The Great Pretender’s Gala, named after the song Mercury recorded in 1987. Proceeds from the party will benefit The Mercury Phoenix Trust, an organization that fights HIV/AIDS.
Guests are encouraged to dress up for the occasion. The band shared on Instagram, “We are leaning into Freddie’s smarter, sharper dress sense, so think tuxedos, dresses, waistcoats, cravats, scarves, and maybe even a monocle or face mask. Dress for a Rock n’ Roll Ball!”
Roger Taylor and Brian May founded The Mercury Phoenix Trust with their manager Jim Beach to honor Freddie after his passing from AIDS in 1991. Last November, the Royal Mint honored Mercury by featuring him on a UK coin, showcasing him mid-performance alongside his signature.
In December, UMe released Mercury’s solo album, Mr. Bad Guy, on vinyl to mark 40 years since its original release. This album allowed him to explore a different sound, blending his songwriting with dance music and pop.
The Casino Barrière holds special significance for Queen, as they recorded several albums there. Montreux became a second home for Mercury during his final years.
Tickets for the party will go on sale later this month, with more details to be announced soon. Get ready to celebrate Freddie’s legacy in style!
