Sam Fender has shared the new music video for “Spit Of You,” starring This Is England actor Stephen Graham.
The video sees Graham play the North Shields musician’s dad. Together, they portray a strained relationship that manifests in awkward silences or erupts into arguments while the pair take part in activities including playing pool, fishing, and watching TV.
Band Of Brothers and Chernobyl star Philip Barantini directed the visuals and has also worked with Graham on a new one-shot film called Boiling Point. The movie will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11.
“Stephen Graham is genuinely one of the best actors this country has ever seen, and such a lovely bloke,” Fender said. “I’m so buzzing about it, it’s so beast! I was out of my comfort zone but it was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. Thanks so much to Phil Barantini for making this beauty come to life.”
The musician previously explained that the latest Seventeen Going Under single was about “boys and their dads” and had been inspired by his own relationship with his father. “We both struggle as blokes to communicate the way we feel to each other without it becoming a stand off,” he said.
“It’s about how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as I get further into my twenties I see so much of myself in him, especially when it comes to being stubborn. The second half of the song talks about seeing him with my grandma when she passed away, and how I saw him as a son, and how that moment reminded me to make the most of my time with him. If anything, it’s a declaration of love for him.”
Seventeen Going Under will be released on Friday (October 8) and follows the acclaimed musician and former BRITs Critics Choice Award winner’s much-lauded 2019 debut album Hypersonic Missiles. The new record will also feature the recent singles “Aye”, “Get You Down” and the album’s title track.
