Sam Means of The Format looks back on their first comeback gig before the reunion tour: ‘Our faces were melted’

The Format’s Sam Means Reflects on Comeback Show Ahead of Reunion Tour

The Format is back! After breaking up in 2008, bandmates Nate Ruess and Sam Means have finally reunited. Their first show since then took place in 2025 in their hometown of Phoenix, and the response was incredible. “Surprised is an understatement,” Means said. “Our faces were melted by what was going on.”

The comeback show was held in a basketball arena, marking the band’s biggest headlining performance ever. Means joked, “I don’t even know if fun. ever played a headlining show that big.” The energy that night was unmatched.

Originally, The Format planned to reunite in 2020 for a series of shows, but those were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The five-year wait allowed them to create a new album, *Boycott Heaven*, their first in 20 years. “I’m sad the 2020 shows didn’t happen,” Means said, “but in hindsight, this is a much better situation.”

*Boycott Heaven* is out now, and The Format is set to kick off a full reunion tour in Boston on Thursday. “We’ll be playing a lot of new stuff and plenty of old favorites,” Means shared. “We like to mix up the set list for each show. Nate is famous for changing it up at the last minute, so fans can expect a good variety.”
