Sam Smith has just released a new single called “To Be Free.” The song features The TwoCity Chorus, a group of artists from Philadelphia and New York City, put together by Brandon Pain and Ant Clemons. Smith co-wrote and produced the track with longtime collaborator Simon Aldred.
“To Be Free” was recorded in one take with just an acoustic guitar. Smith originally wrote the song five years ago during the sessions for their 2023 album, Gloria. However, they decided to set it aside because it didn’t fit the album’s vibe. Smith explained, “It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself.”
Along with the single, Smith announced a special event called “To Be Free: New York City.” This 12-night residency will take place at the Brooklyn venue Warsaw from October 8th to 31st. Artist presale starts on July 29th at 10 AM local time, with general sales beginning on August 1st.
The release of “To Be Free” is also accompanied by an official video filmed at Warsaw, directed by the French dance collective (LA)HORDE. Smith previously worked with them on the video for the hit single “Unholy” featuring Kim Petras, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and earned them a Grammy.
Smith shared, “Over the last five years, Simon and I created music that fits into this world of ‘To Be Free.’ It’s become my sister, my family member, and ultimately calms me. Now, I’m ready to let it go and hopefully it can do the same for someone else.”
