British singer songwriter Sam Tompkins has shared his new single “phones in heaven” and announces his highly-anticipated debut album hi, my name is insecure via Republic Records, due to drop May 24.

“phones in heaven” is a brutally honest portrayal of the pain and confusion that comes with missing someone; having your time with them cut short and longing to hear from them again. You can hear the new track below.

Speaking on the single, Tompkins says, “When I originally wrote “phones in heaven,” my real intention was to write a song for young people, especially men who have lost a friend early. As I’ve got older and meet more people, most people I know have at some point lost someone they loved prematurely through illness, suicide or other things; myself included.

“It’s coming from a place where you want to enjoy your life and move forward, but in a lot of cases because you didn’t get closure, you feel as though you can’t. You honestly think maybe just one call from that person would give you peace, but sadly life doesn’t always work like that. When I lost my dad to suicide in November of last year, this song felt even more powerful to me, so it felt like the most fitting way to come into 2024. To show others that they are not alone in their struggles and that we can all get through these things if we just open up conversation.”

The artist’s new album hi, my name is insecure is the sum of years of hard work from Sam as he builds his dream body of work, incorporating tracks which are already fan favourites alongside exciting new material. The album, out 24 May, also sees Sam team up with writer Pablo Bowman (Calvin Harris, James Arthur, Jonas Brothers) as well as writer and producer Danny Casio (Little Mix, Joy Crookes, Tom Grennan, Rudimental).

The album will include hit tracks “someone else,” “time will fly,” “see me,” “lose it all” and the new single “phones in heaven,” with the rest of the album yet to be announced. Sam’s 2022 EP ‘Who Do You Pray To?’ rocketed into the top 10 of the UK Album Chart and he has since been hailed by GQ as “one of the UK’s most exciting vocal talents of the moment” and CLASH as “the man of the moment”. His artistry and creative vision for himself continues to go from strength to strength.

The title of the album, hi, my name is insecure, speaks to Sam’s more introverted side as he explains, “I really like being in the company of my friends, but if you take me out of my comfort zone, and have me hang out at a party or an event or whatever, I just go inside myself and I find any excuse to get out of it.”

Throughout April, Sam Tompkins will support Australian artist Kid Laroi on his UK & European tour. The shows, running from April 4-27 include a huge show at London’s Alexandra Palace on April 16.

Since starting his musical journey at 16 years old busking on the streets of Brighton, Sam has gone on to sell out shows around the world and amass a dedicated and enraptured fanbase, cementing his reputation as one of the fastest rising British male artists. He’s cultivated an incredible online community for millions to share their love of music and has received praise from high profile artists including Drake, Fred again.., Justin Bieber, RAYE, Sam Smith, Krept & Konan and more.
