Scammers Going After REAL ID Applicants

A surge of scams targeting people seeking REAL IDs has prompted warnings from federal officials. The uptick comes as people prepare for the May 7, 2025 deadline to have a proper ID for domestic flights and entering federal buildings.

Scammers are creating fake websites and sending out texts and emails to steal personal information from people applying. “All Real ID applications and processes will be handled in person at your local DMV,” said James Chatwani to NBC Bay Area.

The DMV will never contact you through phone calls, texts, or emails asking for personal information. These scammers are posting fake offers across social media, saying they can speed up REAL ID processing.

The only legitimate way to get a REAL ID is through state DMV offices. Everyone must show up in person with their identity documents and required paperwork.

With several deadline changes since COVID hit in 2020, many people are confused about what they need. Scammers are taking advantage of this confusion, especially targeting those trying to beat the deadline.

Officials are asking people to tell their family members about the proper steps for getting a REAL ID. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to online scams.

As people plan their summer trips, it’s important to remember – you won’t be able to fly domestically without a REAL ID card or passport.
