Seniors Beware: Snow Shoveling Poses Significant Health Risk

As winter rolls in and we move from 2025 to 2026, expect plenty of cold, ice, and snow in the area. Before you grab your shovel to clear the sidewalk or driveway, be careful. Snow shoveling can be risky, especially for older adults and those with health issues.

From 1990 to 2006, over 200,000 adults ended up in emergency rooms due to snow shoveling injuries, and more than 1,600 deaths were linked to it. If you’re over 45 or have heart problems, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, take extra care. Smokers, those who are overweight, or people who don’t exercise much should also be cautious.

Snow shoveling can put a lot of stress on your heart. It involves static exertion, heavy lifting, and working in cold air, which can be tough on your body.

To stay safe while shoveling, try these tips:

– Use ergonomic shovels to make the job easier.
– Take breaks to avoid overdoing it.
– Dress warmly to protect against the cold.
– Lift with your legs, not your back, and keep your back straight.
– Avoid twisting your body while shoveling.

Stay safe out there, and enjoy the winter wonderland!
