Sheryl Crow kicked off the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony with a performance of “If It Makes You Happy” where she was joined by Olivia Rodrigo.
The singer-songwriter was then inducted into the Rock Hall by friend Laura Dern. The acclaimed actor touted Crow’s incredible catalog, influence, and her strength during her breast cancer batter. She also shared a fun detail about Crow’s kindness.
“She’s the kind of friend that when you need support, she’ll just move you into her house. Literally, I can tell you,” said Dern.
The video package highlighting Crow’s career only helped solidify why she deserves to be in the Rock Hall. It featured commentary from Rodrigo, Stevie Nicks and Maren Morris.
Rodrigo noted, “She just says things I would’ve never thought of in the most beautiful way.” Meanwhile, Morris said, “She’s just such a badass … She encapsulates what rock and roll is. She just effortlessly legendary.” Nicks succinctly drove home a point that her many fans likely agree with.
“Sheryl really is pretty fearless,” said Nicks. “If she really feels strong about something, and if it’s political, she doesn’t care, and she’s going to say something … She is everything that every girl should want to be.”

Following the video package, Crow returned to the stage and was joined by Nicks. Together, they performed Crow’s hit “Strong Enough.” Crow and Nicks were then joined by Peter Frampton for a rousing rendition of “Everyday is Winding Road.”
When the performance was over, Crow accepted her Rock Hall honor. As a musician still active today, she said during her acceptance speech, “This is like getting an Oscar for a screenplay you haven’t finished writing yet.”
Crow made a point to shout out her many inspirations, including Willie Nelson, who she was “thrilled” to be inducted with on the same night. She thanked her parents for their support and “piano lessons.” Crow also shouted out her hometown of Kennett, Missouri, which was hosting a livestream watch event in honor of her.
She closed out her speech by quoting the late Jimmy Buffett.
“He said, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life,’” said Crow. “Yes, for me, there have been ups and downs on this journey, but mine is a story of infinite possibility. For any young person setting out on the musical journey, I love the work.”
