Shinedown was one of the rare artists that actually had a positive 2020. Why? They made Billboard chart history.
In August, the band netted their 16th number one song on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart with the single “Atlas Falls.” This stand-alone single, which was released to help raise funds for COVID-19 relief, broke the record for most number ones in the chart’s nearly 40-year history. (The previous record holder was Three Days Grace, who earned their 15th number one on the chart in September 2018 with “Infra-Red.”)
This very impressive record got its start nearly 15 years prior with “Save Me,” which was Shinedown’s first number one hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart back in November 2005.
In a statement on this incredible accomplishment, singer Brent Smith said, “Myself, Barry, Zach and Eric are beyond humbled. ‘Atlas Falls’ represents so many emotions, especially now. The success of this song would have never been achieved if it wasn’t for the audience, the fans, family, the people. A song that was written and recorded eight years ago found its voice in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic as a symbol of optimism, courage and the human spirit.”
Smith added, “I want to personally thank our management In De Goot Entertainment, our label Atlantic Records, our incredible partners at radio and Direct Relief for giving us the inspiration to release the song. We share this No. 1 with the whole world, and we say thank you so very much. ‘Don’t give up now. There’s already so much at stake.’”
