Sophie Ellis-Bextor has recruited EDM icon David Guetta for a massive remix of her monumental single “Murder on the Dancefloor.”
The new version features rave-inspired synths that give the song an instant energy, dropping out and reemerging alongside wailing sirens to give the song a different edge. Check it out below.
Last month, Ellis-Bextor on her first ever North American headlining tour. The English singer and songwriter will be heading stateside for shows in San Francisco on May 30, San Diego on May 31, Washington, DC on June 3, Boston on June 4, Philadelphia on June 5, and Toronto on June 8. These are in addition to her previously announced New York show at Webster Hall on June 6.
Earlier this year, Ellis-Bextor found global chart success as “Murder on the Dancefloor” became a worldwide viral hit.
It charted at No. 2 on the Official UK Singles Chart, matching the chart position it achieved 22 years ago. It also hit a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100, rocketing up 40 spots on the chart from No.98 to No. 58—marking Sophie’s first song to chart on the Hot 100 in her career.
After featuring in the epic final scene of Emerald Fennell’s recently released and much talked about film Saltburn, Sophie’s popular 2001 hit “Murder on the Dancefloor” saw a huge resurgence. Old and new fans were streaming the track, and the song was used as a trending audio for millions of videos on both Instagram and TikTok.
The new Guetta remix follows the seven-track digital EP she released in January. That collection also included its original B-side “Never Let Me Down” and a series of remixes of “Murder On The Dancefloor.” The remixes – including versions overseen by the likes of Jewels & Stone, Danny D and the Twin Club Murder mix – were all originally released in 2001, but the majority of them were brand new to streaming services.
Speaking in an interview with the NME, the singer said, “I didn’t really know exactly how it would play in terms of the role it was in the movie until I saw it at the screening, but I absolutely loved it…I think it’s such a clever, funny, smart film. I really enjoyed it.”
Ellis-Bextor added that she was happy for Saltburn director Emerald Fennell to use her song, because they “didn’t really have a plan B” for the film.
