Stanley Turrentine’s ‘Look Out!’ Gets Vinyl Reissue

Look Out!, the heralded 1960 debut album from jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, will soon be available in a new vinyl pressing. The LP is the latest entry in Blue Note’s Classic Vinyl Series, which promises “audiophile reissues from the finest in jazz since 1939.”

Turrentine is perhaps best known for his extensive work in the realm of bluesy soul-jazz and jazz fusion. But Look Out!, which comprises the Pittsburgh native’s first recordings as a bandleader, shows off his skills within a more traditional bop milieu. The album turns Turrentine loose with a rhythm section of pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Al Harewood. The result is a collection of music that, per AllMusic Guide, “allows Turrentine’s big, clear tone to shine through in all its muscular sweetness, giving Look Out! a wonderful and flowing coherence.”

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, Look Out! comprises a trio of Turrentine originals, the Parlan-composed “Return Engagement,” and four more tunes by a range of writers. Alfred Lion produced the June 18, 1960 session. Noted critic Marc Myers calls it “a superb entry point for those looking to explore the Turrentine catalog,” while Charles Waring noted, “with its eye-grabbing exclamation mark, the album title was intended as an invitation rather than a warning, alerting the jazz fan to something remarkable inside. Though Stanley Turrentine would go on to rack up almost 30 recording sessions for Blue Note in the 60s, before departing for new adventures elsewhere, Look Out! documents a significant moment in time – the first step in a prolific and storied recording career.”

The Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition of Look Out! is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Germany’s award-winning Optimal Media.
