Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear reunited on stage at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27 to accept the Video Vanguard Award. The appearance came 34 years after the band’s debut performance at the VMAs in 1992. The Video Vanguard Award honors artists for their overall impact on music and music videos, with past recipients including Madonna, Michael Jackson, U2, George Michael, and Guns N’ Roses.
Accepting the honor on behalf of the group, bassist Krist Novoselic reflected on Nirvana’s visual history, highlighting videos for tracks such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom,” “Come As You Are,” and “Heart-Shaped Box.” Novoselic credited late frontman Kurt Cobain with guiding the band’s creative vision, calling him “one of the greatest artists of all time” and stating that Cobain “would’ve loved” the enduring legacy of their music.
