Tama Unveils Exclusive Mike Portnoy Signature Snare Drum Featuring Dream Monster Finish

Tama has launched a limited-edition Mike Portnoy signature snare drum, with only 500 units available. Each drum features the same striking finish as Portnoy’s Dream Monster kit, which he introduced after rejoining Dream Theater in fall 2023.

The snare shell is 8mm thick and made from 9 plies of Bubinga wood, topped with 8-lug die-cast hoops. The unique finish showcases white paint that flows into a purple sparkle, and since each drum is hand-painted, no two are exactly alike.

One standout feature is the 3-way tension-adjustable strainer, allowing players to switch between tight, loose, and off modes. This means you can change snare sounds during a performance. The drum measures 14 inches by 5.5 inches and has the model number MP1455BUN stamped on it.

The Dream Monster kit’s design was inspired by Portnoy himself, as a nod to his original Purple Monster setup from years ago. He co-founded Dream Theater in 1985 with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung. Over his career, he has contributed to 10 albums, starting with 1989’s When Dream And Day Unite and ending with 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings. He left the band in 2010.

Dream Theater’s sixteenth studio album, Parasomnia, is set to release on February 7, 2025. This will be Portnoy’s first album back with the band since Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album is produced by Petrucci, engineered by James “Jimmy T” Meslin, and mixed by Andy Sneap, with cover art by Hugh Syme.

At 57, Portnoy has faced physical challenges from performing demanding three-hour shows. He now relies on regular massage therapy and chiropractic care to stay in shape. Fans can look forward to more updates about the Dream Monster and the band’s upcoming projects.
