The Origin of Black Sabbath’s Movie-Inspired Name Revealed at Their Final Show

In 1963, a horror film starring Boris Karloff inspired the name Black Sabbath, a fact that amazed fans during the band’s final concert. The legendary metal group said goodbye on July 5 in their hometown of Birmingham, England.

Black Sabbath formed in 1968, originally calling themselves the Earth Blues Company. They changed their name to avoid confusion with another band already using the name Earth. The name Black Sabbath came from a song by bassist Geezer Butler. Butler also had a dream that reminded him of the movie Black Sabbath, which helped inspire both the band’s name and their music.

Their farewell concert, titled Back to the Beginning, featured metal heavyweights like Metallica, Slayer, and Gojira. Steven Tyler teamed up with Ronnie Wood for a special performance that lit up the festival stage.

However, the night took a turn when Marilyn Manson appeared via video. He expressed his admiration for Ozzy Osbourne, saying, “It is a great honor to be here via this video, and I’d like to say congratulations, and I love you very much, Ozzy.” Some fans were not happy with Manson’s appearance due to past sexual abuse claims from 2021, which he contests.

Interestingly, the other band named Earth has been making drone rock since 1989. Their existence pushed Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, and Butler to choose a name that would go down in music history. Many fans love the name Black Sabbath, seeing it as a perfect fit for the band’s dark and heavy sound. Social media is buzzing with admiration for the iconic group as they wrap up their legendary career.
