The Pussycat Dolls are the latest group featured in a VEVO Footnotes video, celebrating their hit song “Buttons” featuring Snoop Dogg. This video comes as the group marks the 20th anniversary of their debut album, PCD, which was released in 2005. The popular remix of “Buttons” with Snoop Dogg dropped in summer 2006 and has nearly one billion views on YouTube.
Written by Sean Garrett, Jamal Jones, and Jason Perry, “Buttons” sold two million digital copies in the US, making The Pussycat Dolls the first girl group to have three singles reach this milestone. The song is now certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
The VEVO Footnotes documentary dives into the making of the “Buttons” video, directed by Francis Lawrence, and the band’s origins. Choreographer Robin Antin initially created The Pussycat Dolls as a burlesque troupe, performing at The Viper Room in Los Angeles with guest stars like Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani. In 2003, Jimmy Iovine helped transform them into a full-fledged girl group, holding auditions to find permanent members. Nicole Scherzinger was recommended by will.i.am, and Carmit Bachar was the only original member to stay.
Ron Fair, a producer for the group, describes them as a “winning basketball team,” with each member bringing unique talent. Scherzinger noted that the “Buttons” video aimed to capture the Dolls’ roots with a raw and edgy vibe, a sentiment echoed by Bachar.
Though the group went on hiatus in 2019, they reunited for a tour that same year. Their music continues to inspire new artists, with Canadian DJ BLOND:ISH recently releasing a remix of “Don’t Cha.” Check out the VEVO Footnotes episode now!
