The Smashing Pumpkins are bringing “Pumpkinpalooza” to Chicago as they prepare to headline Lollapalooza. It’s the band’s first time headlining the festival in their hometown since Lolla moved to Grant Park in 2005. The celebration starts with a sold-out underplay at the Riviera Theatre on Wednesday. From Wednesday through Friday, a Pumpkins pop-up at 900 S. Wabash Ave. will sell exclusive merch. Lolla-goers can also visit Madame Zuzu’s Celestial Lounge, an expanded version of frontman Billy Corgan’s teashop in Highland Park, run with his wife, Chloé Mendel Corgan. Nearby, The Aviary bar will serve a limited cocktail called Infinite Mellons, named after Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. “As a Chicagoan, born and raised, I take great pride in contributing to our city’s immense and colorful cultural fabric,” Corgan says. Lollapalooza runs Thursday through Sunday, and the Pumpkins play Friday. The lineup also features Lorde, The xx, Turnstile, sombr, Empire of the Sun, Wet Leg, Yungblud, The Neighbourhood and beabadoobee. The festival will stream on Hulu and Disney+.
