Julian Casablancas and The Strokes were joined onstage by pop star Charli XCX during their headlining set at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival over the weekend. Charli surprised the crowd and sang with the band on their Is This It track “Take It or Leave It.”
Before introducing her, Casablancas joked that she had “defeated us at the album sales.” Both artists released new albums on July 24. Charli’s album Music, Fashion, Film debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The Strokes’ Reality Awaits landed at No. 13.
Casablancas and Charli have worked together before. He appeared on her 2024 remix album Brat, on the song “Mean Girls.”
The Strokes are touring the U.S. this summer to support Reality Awaits. After Outside Lands they head to Japan for the Summer Sonic festival. They return to California for the Just Like Heaven festival on Aug. 22. Fans who like surprise guests and cross-genre collaborations will want to catch a show.
