The Sundays’ ‘Static & Silence’ Receives Vinyl Reissue

The Sundays’ celebrated 1997 dream pop classic, Static & Silence, is out now as a 1LP 140-gram black vinyl edition, remastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering. This vinyl re-release comes with a printed poly-lined sleeve featuring original album lyrics.

Originally released in the U.S. on September 23, 1997, Static & Silence is the third album from the beloved ‘90s band. The album features the singles “Summertime” and “Cry,” as well as other fan favorites “Monochrome,” “When I’m Thinking About You,” and many others.

The indie-pop act’s third album was celebrated upon release, thanks to sharp singles like the aforementioned “Summertime,” which was actually inspired by several of the bands’ friends joining a dating service. In an archived Billboard feature, the band noted that: “people can really oppress themselves with that mythic picture of romance, so we just wanted to address in a tongue-in-cheek way that the easily gained perfect partnership is indeed a myth.” A U.K. Top 20 hit on release in 1997, the song also performed strongly around the world and it remains one of The Sundays’ most loved tracks.

Elsewhere, on the guitar-led “Cry,” lead vocalist Harriet Weaver tells the tale of a dissolved relationship with her signature blend of honesty and vivid descriptors: “And I’m standing on a platform/ Now I’m staring from a train/ And all the trees roll back beside, but I’m so oblivious/ To the dark, to the light/ It’s all the same.” Synths provide plenty of emotional ammo as she adds during the pre-chorus: “You gave me so much/ And now it’s of the earth.”

Order The Sundays’ Static & Silence on vinyl now.
