The Taipei 101 climber had a playlist of mostly Tool tunes playing during the live broadcast.

Alex Honnold faced his climb of Taipei 101 with the music of Tool pumping in his ears. During a Netflix live special that aired Saturday, Honnold completed a free solo ascent of the iconic skyscraper. He shared with Variety that he was listening to a playlist he created, which featured “mostly Tool.”

“I made it months ago while driving and shared it with the production team,” Honnold explained. “I’ve been training to it a lot. It’s just rock music I’ve loved my whole life.”

However, the music didn’t play perfectly. “It kept cutting out during the climb,” he said. “I couldn’t really hear it, but I thought, ‘Whatever. I’m just doing my thing.'”

Honnold’s choice of Tool might even inspire the band to create new music. They released their last album, Fear Inoculum, in 2019 after a long 13-year wait. Meanwhile, Maynard James Keenan is busy with his other project, Puscifer, which is set to drop a new album, Normal Isn’t, on February 6.
