The Tragically Hip have released a new guitar tutorial for their 1994 hit “Grace, Too.” Guitarist Paul Langlois shares memories from the band’s Bathhouse Studio while teaching fans how to play the song. “The whole band just fell into something that felt meant to be,” Langlois says. “We all knew it was going to be a big song for us.”
Langlois explains the band’s songwriting process, recalling how they would share musical ideas in a circle. When they worked on “Grace, Too,” everything clicked. “Everyone found their parts without discussion. It came together quickly, and we knew it was special.”
In the tutorial, Langlois breaks down how to play the song, detailing the chords and frets needed. He also answers fan questions, including one about the song’s build-up and climax.
“Grace, Too” was the lead single from The Tragically Hip’s 1994 album, Day For Night. The song became a major hit in Canada and was famously performed on Saturday Night Live. Langlois remembers feeling comfortable during the performance, saying, “We thought, we’re on Saturday Night Live, we need to be comfortable.”
The performance is also memorable for a mix-up when lead singer Gord Downey mistakenly sang, “He said I’m tragically hip,” instead of the correct line. Despite the slip, the band quickly got back on track.
