Having now surpassed four billion streams, The Weeknd’s hit song “Blinding Lights” has broken its own record and the Spotify record of most streams for a song in the platform’s history.
The song passed Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” as the all-time most-streamed song on the service just over a year ago, and it is one of two Weeknd songs in the top 10: his 2016 song “Starboy” is at No. 6, with nearly 2.5 billion streams.

In February 2023 Abel Tesfaye became the first artist in Spotify history to reach 100 million monthly listeners. Now, at the time of writing, he is also currently the number 1 artist on platform with 113 million monthly listeners.
Sharing the news on Spotify’s official Instagram and X (Twitter) social accounts, The Weeknd wrote “I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people let alone billions! I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen.”
The 80’s nostalgic track “Blinding Lights” was named the new No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 song of all time, surpassing Chubby Checker’s 1960 hit “The Twist.” The song, which appeared on Tesfaye’s After Hours album and was released in late 2019, stayed on the charts for over 100 weeks. In 2021, “Blinding Lights” also won 2020’s IFPI Global Digital Single Award.
The IFPI Global Digital Single Award is presented to the world’s best-selling single of the year across all digital formats – including single track downloads, and streams on both paid subscription services and ad-supported platforms.
During 2022, The Weeknd earned Diamond certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for both “Starboy” and “Blinding Lights.” The rare certification denotes that a song has moved (at least) ten million units, between a digital purchase or 150 streams.
