The Who’s 60th anniversary poster series continues this week with new artwork celebrating Live at Leeds. This is the fourth release in the bimonthly series, created by Dutch artist Maarten Donders. His mixed media illustration combines traditional and digital techniques, featuring Roger Daltrey as a striking figure on stage, surrounded by his tight-knit band.
Donders draws inspiration from vintage concert posters of the ‘60s and ‘70s. He has previously designed art for artists like Sturgill Simpson, Billy Strings, and Ween. His surreal, psychedelic style adds a dramatic flair to his subjects, which was intentional for this piece. “The 60s and 70s were a legendary time for rock music,” Donders says. “When you think of The Who, you think of their powerful live shows, crushing guitar riffs, and an incredible group of musicians. I wanted to capture the band’s wild energy and the unique personalities of each member, with a fiery wall of amps in the background!”
You can get Donders’ Live at Leeds artwork as a poster or a T-shirt, or buy them together in a bundle. Previous drops in the series include designs by Robin Gnista for The Who’s 1965 debut single “I Can’t Explain,” Tom Walker’s tribute to their 1967 appearance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and Matt Needle’s take on the 1969 rock opera Tommy.
The final two drops will focus on 1973’s Quadrophenia and The Who’s mid-1970s U.S. tour. Check out the new poster celebrating Live at Leeds now!
