‘The Who’s Tommy’ Musical Being Revived on Broadway

The Who’s Tommy, the stage musical adaptation of the 1969 Who album and the 1975 film, is coming back to Broadway.

Per Playbill, the revival of The Who’s Tommy is slated to open on March 28, 2024 at the Nederlander Theatre. Previews begin on March 8. A trailer for the revival is below.

The show had a sold-out run in Chicago this summer at the Goodman Theatre. It’s also being dubbed as a “newly reimagined production.” The original run of The Who’s Tommy opened on Broadway in 1993 and went on to win five Tony Awards.

Pete Townshend, The Who guitarist/mastermind behind Tommy, is attached to the revival. He said in a statement, “I can’t wait to see how this newly empowered show connects with younger Broadway audiences today.

Townshend added, “I hope the younger ones come, for they will identify in an entirely new and important way with Tommy’s tumultuous life.”

A New Rock Opera from Townshend

Townshend is no stranger to the rock opera, and he has another one in the works. The guitar icon shared this in a new interview with U.K.’s The Sun. The new rock opera is a musical score for his 2019 novel The Age of Anxiety.

Townshend noted, “I am also working on a documentary about the project, from its inception in 2007 until today. I’m probably two years off completing it, at which time I hope to perform it with a full opera and a cast of guest singers.”

The Age of Anxiety is the first novel Townshend ever released. A synopsis says the book “deals with mythic and operatic themes including a maze, divine madness and long-lost children.” The synopsis further notes, “Hallucinations and soundscapes haunt this novel, which on one level is an extended meditation on manic genius and the dark art of creativity.”
