Thin Lizzy To Release ‘The Acoustic Sessions’

Thin Lizzy is releasing their first album in over 40 years. Acoustic Sessions features stripped-down versions of some of the Dublin rock band’s classics, including “Dublin,” “Mama Nature Said,” Eire,” “Slow Blues,” and “Here I Go Again.”

Acoustic Sessions also features a new version of “Whiskey In The Jar,” their breakout 1972 single. It pairs original vocals from the late singer Phil Lynott, who died in 1986 from a drug-related illness, paired with brand-new guitar parts from founding member Eric Bell.

The new album is the first time since Bell exited the group that he has recorded under the Thin Lizzy name. Richard Whittaker provided a new mix and master based on original cuts from Thin Lizzy’s time at Decca Records. In a statement, Bell recalled recording “Eire” in 1971, writing a main guitar party acoustically first before building it up to 12-string, then electric, on a final version.

“This was useful in the studio in Belfast recently where we recorded fresh guitar parts to allow us to create new Thin Lizzy acoustic versions of some of our favorite songs, by recreating those original acoustic parts and adding the vocals which Philip laid down on the day and those original drum parts which Brian [Downey] came up with in the original recording sessions,” Bell continued.

The album is available for order now in both CD and limited-edition marble vinyl formats. An ultra-limited vinyl edition will feature an exclusive bonus track, “Slow Blues G.M.,” a tribute to Gary Moore. Thin Lizzy’s drummer Brian Downey, the only member to have played in every iteration of the band alongside Lynott, co-wrote the original track.
