August 25 is a significant day in rock history, marked by breakthrough moments and key events that shaped the genre. Here are some highlights from this memorable date.

1970: Elton John made his U.S. debut at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. He played six nights in a row, selling out the 300-seat venue each time.

1975: Bruce Springsteen released his third studio album, Born to Run. This album was seen as his big break, gaining acclaim from both critics and fans.

1999: Smash Mouth’s hit “All Star” climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at No. 4 but continued to hold strong at No. 5.

Important cultural milestones also took place on August 25:

1949: Gene Simmons, bassist of KISS, was born in Haifa, Israel. He moved to the U.S. at age 8 after his parents divorced.

1951: Rob Halford, frontman of Judas Priest, was born in Sutton Coldfield, England. He joined the band in 1973 and is often called a “godfather” of metal.

2000: Musician Jack Nitzsche passed away at 63 from cardiac arrest. He was known for his work with the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, and many others.

1994: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin recorded their MTV Unplugged performance, UnLedded, over two nights starting on August 25 in the U.K.
