This Day in Rock History: December 15

On December 15, many exciting events have shaped the rock world, featuring legends like Elvis, Pink Floyd, and The Who. Here are some key moments from this day in rock history.

1956: Elvis Presley made his final appearance on the Louisiana Hayride radio show. As he left, fans rushed to follow him, prompting program director Horace Logan to famously say, “Elvis has left the building” to calm the crowd.

1967: The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour LP was certified Gold in the U.S. just weeks after its release on November 27. It went on to sell over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone.

1979: Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) hit number one on the U.K. singles chart, where it stayed for five weeks. This song, part of their The Wall album, became their only U.K. No. 1 single and the last to top the charts in the 1970s.

Notable recordings and performances also took place on this day:

1955: Johnny Cash released the single “Folsom Prison Blues” through Sun Records. This song, recorded earlier that year, became one of Cash’s most iconic tracks.

1967: The Who released their third studio album, The Who Sell Out, in the U.K. It received mostly positive reviews but didn’t achieve commercial success.

1969: John Lennon performed for the last time in the U.K. at a UNICEF benefit concert in London. He shared the stage with stars like Eric Clapton and George Harrison.
