This Day in Rock History: July 16

July 16 has been a significant day in music history, marked by both groundbreaking events and memorable moments in rock. From the first atomic bomb test in 1945 to the tragic plane crash of JFK Jr. in 1999, this date has seen it all. In the world of rock, it’s a day filled with chart-topping hits and iconic performances.

In 1986, rock legends like Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Bob Seger, and Van Halen dominated the Billboard 200. Peter Gabriel’s album “So” reached No. 3, while Van Halen’s “OU812” held the No. 1 spot in 1988, with Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” right behind at No. 2. Fast forward to 1993, and Rod Stewart’s “Have I Told You Lately” climbed back to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. By 2000, Matchbox 20’s “Bent” hit No. 1 after 13 weeks on the chart.

July 16 also brought unforgettable cultural moments. In 1996, Michael Jackson performed at the Sultan of Brunei’s 50th birthday party, rocking the crowd with hits like “Beat It.” In 2016, a handwritten letter from Paul McCartney to Prince was auctioned, asking for donations to support the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

However, this day also reminds us of the losses in the music world. In 2012, Deep Purple co-founder Jon Lord passed away at 71, and session musician Bob Babbitt died at 74.

July 16 is a mix of triumphs, celebrations, and farewells. It highlights the heartbeat of music—the artists, the fans, and the stories that go beyond the charts.
