This Day in Rock History: October 11

Oct. 11 is a significant day in rock history, marked by memorable events, including a famous debut and KISS’ transformation after years of performing in full makeup. Here’s a look at what happened on this day over the years.

1983: KISS took a bold step by performing without their iconic face paint for the first time. This happened during the opening show of their Lick It Up tour at Cascais Hall in Lisbon, Portugal. They had briefly appeared without makeup a few weeks earlier on Sept. 18 during an MTV special.

1990: Dave Grohl played his first show with Nirvana at the North Shore Surf Club in Olympia, Washington. He enjoyed a successful four-year run with the band before starting his own group, the Foo Fighters.

2016: Rod Stewart was knighted by Prince William for his contributions to music and charity. Stewart, who began his career in 1962, is a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, both as a solo artist and with the Faces. He has sold over 120 million albums worldwide.

2006: The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins announced he was leaving the band due to struggles with substance addiction. The band later reunited and released several albums, with their latest coming out earlier this year.

2018: The Music Modernization Act was signed into law, addressing copyright issues that had made it hard for older recordings to earn money through streaming services.

From groundbreaking moments to honoring music legends, Oct. 11 has been an exciting day in rock. Check back tomorrow for more thrilling moments in rock history!
