This Day in Sports History: April 10

April is an exciting month for sports fans, featuring NBA and NHL playoffs, the start of MLB, The Masters, the NCAA Basketball title game, the NFL Draft, and Grand Prix events. April 10 has seen many memorable moments in sports history.

In 1874, golfer Mungo Park won the British Open by two strokes. At the 1896 Athens Olympics, Thomas Burke won the 100-meter final in 12 seconds, just days after taking the 400-meter title. That same year, Spyridon Louis of Greece won the first Olympic marathon with a time of 2:58:50.

In 1913, the New York Highlanders played their first game as the New York Yankees, with President Woodrow Wilson throwing the first pitch. The PGA was founded in 1916. Jackie Robinson made history in 1947 as the first Black player to sign an MLB contract.

In 1953, the Minneapolis Lakers clinched their fifth title in six years by defeating the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. The following year, Wales shared the Five Nations Rugby Championship with France and England. In 1956, Jean BƩliveau helped the Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup.

April 10 has also seen incredible achievements like Nellie Fox tying the MLB Opening Day record with five hits in 1959 and Arnold Palmer winning by one stroke in 1960. In 2005, Tiger Woods claimed his fourth green jacket in a playoff.

Three standout athletes from April 10 are Jackie Robinson, known for his skill and bravery; Nellie Fox, a 12-time All-Star; and Arnold Palmer, a legendary golfer.
