This Day in Sports History: July 15

July is all about Major League Baseball, NBA Summer League games, the British Grand Prix, Tour de France, NASCAR races, golf tournaments, the MLB All-Star game, Wimbledon, and track and field events. There are also some unforgettable sports moments and stories from legends. Let’s dive into some highlights from July 15th:

In 1876, George Bradley pitched the first official no-hitter in MLB history. Fast forward to 1884, and William Renshaw won his fourth straight Wimbledon title. In 1895, Charlotte Cooper claimed her first of five Wimbledon singles titles.

By 1901, Christy Mathewson threw a no-hitter against St. Louis. In 1909, Ty Cobb hit two inside-the-park home runs in one day against the Washington Senators. Jim Thorpe made history in 1912 by placing in the top four in all 10 Olympic events and winning the Decathlon.

Babe Ruth tied the MLB record for career home runs in 1921, while Gene Sarazen won his first major title at the US Men’s Golf Open in 1922. Nicolas Frantz dominated the Tour de France in 1928, wearing the yellow jersey from start to finish.

In 1970, Brooks Robinson hit for the cycle, and in 1973, Nolan Ryan pitched his second no-hitter. Fast forward to 2018, when France beat Croatia 4-2 to win the FIFA World Cup, with Didier Deschamps becoming the third person to win as both player and coach.

Looking back, Ty Cobb, Jim Thorpe, and Manny Pacquiao stand out. Cobb was a fierce competitor, Thorpe faced controversy but was later honored, and Pacquiao made a comeback with a knockout win after nine years. These moments remind us why we love sports!
