This Day in Top 40 History: April 10

Female pop stars like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo ruled the charts on April 10, while Justin Bieber and The Backstreet Boys represented the male artists in the Top 40.

In music history, several breakthrough hits and milestones stand out. In 1976, Peter Frampton’s live album, “Frampton Comes Alive!” topped the Billboard 200 for 10 weeks and sold over 8 million copies in the US. In 1982, Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast” reached No. 1 on the UK album charts, becoming their best-selling album with over 20 million copies sold. In 2013, Kate Bush received a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music, recognized by Queen Elizabeth II. More recently, in 2021, Olivia Rodrigo’s song peaked at No. 1 on the Top 40 for 10 weeks, while Billie Eilish’s hit held the No. 2 spot for 17 weeks.

Cultural milestones also shaped music history. In 1954, Leo Fender patented the iconic Fender Stratocaster guitar. In 1970, Paul McCartney announced the Beatles’ breakup in a press release for his solo album, citing personal and musical differences. Sophie Ellis-Bextor was born in 1979 and later scored a UK No. 1 hit.

Notable performances include Madonna’s sold-out shows in Seattle during her Virgin Tour in 1985, Taylor Swift’s concert in Miami on her Red tour in 2013, and Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour in 2016, featuring Post Malone and Moxie Raia. The Backstreet Boys continued their residency in 2019, keeping their fan-friendly style alive.
