This Day in Top 40 History: April 12  

April 12 has seen many exciting moments in music history. On this day, Garth Brooks was making his debut, while stars like Mariah Carey and the Backstreet Boys were at the height of their careers. Let’s take a look at some of the most memorable events that took place on this day.

In 1954, Bill Haley & His Comets recorded their legendary hit, becoming the first rock ‘n’ roll record to top the charts in both the US and the UK. It also spent two weeks at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Fast forward to 1969, The Fifth Dimension’s song from the musical Hair reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for six weeks. This was their first chart-topping hit and earned them a GRAMMY for Record of the Year. In 2005, Mariah Carey made a stunning comeback with her tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned her eight GRAMMY nominations.

April 12 also marks significant cultural milestones. David Cassidy was born in 1950, rising to fame on The Partridge Family and achieving a No. 1 hit with “I Think I Love You.” Sadly, in 2025, legendary producer Roy Thomas Baker passed away at 78, known for his work with Queen and many other successful artists.

Notable releases on this day include Garth Brooks’ self-titled debut album in 1989, which went Diamond and featured his first No. 1 single. In 1999, the Backstreet Boys released “Larger Than Life,” a hit that peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2011, Foo Fighters launched their seventh album, Wasting Light, which debuted at No. 1 in 12 countries.
