This Day in Top 40 History: April 20

On April 20, 1992, Wembley Stadium in London hosted A Concert for Life, a tribute to Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, who passed away from AIDS in December 1991. More than 70,000 fans attended to celebrate his legacy. The lineup included big names like David Bowie, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Elton John, and Lisa Stansfield.

April 20 has also seen significant album releases in Top 40 history. In 1978, Rick James released his debut album, Come Get It!, which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It featured hit singles that reached the Top Five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In 1993, Aerosmith released their 11th studio album, Get a Grip, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking their first chart-topping album in the U.S.

Cultural milestones on this date include the birth of Luther Vandross in 1951, an eight-time GRAMMY winner known for hits like “Dance with My Father.” In 1990, Janet Jackson received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at just 23 years old. In 1994, Barbra Streisand performed at Wembley Arena, showcasing her talent during The Concert Tour.

April 20 has also seen artists step away from music or tragically pass away. In 1999, Ma$e announced he was quitting music to focus on his faith, just two years after his debut album, Harlem World. He later returned with his third studio album, Welcome Back. In 2018, Avicii, born Tim Bergling, died by suicide at 28. He struggled with mental health issues and addiction, leaving behind hits like “Wake Me Up.”
