This Day in Top 40 History: April 5

On April 5, 2019, Aretha Franklin’s documentary “Amazing Grace” premiered in theaters, almost 50 years after it was recorded in 1972. The film showcased her powerful live gospel performances at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This date has also seen many significant moments in Top 40 history.

In 2013, Paramore released their self-titled album, which became their only No. 1 record on the Billboard 200. The album produced two Top 30 hits, including one that won the GRAMMY for Best Rock Song in 2015. Fast forward to 2024, Vampire Weekend dropped “Only God Was Above Us,” their fifth studio album, featuring hits that peaked at No. 11 in the U.K.

April 5 is also a day for celebrating birthdays in the music world. Paula Cole, born in 1968, gained fame as a singer for Peter Gabriel and is known for her Top 30 hits. Pharrell Williams, born in 1973, rose to prominence with The Neptunes and later as a solo artist, with his hit “Happy” topping the charts for weeks.

However, this date has also marked some tragic events. In 1994, Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana, died at 27, leaving behind iconic albums like “Nevermind.” In 2008, Toto played their final concert in Seoul before disbanding after over 40 years in the industry. A statue of Cobain’s guitar was unveiled in 2011, honoring his legacy on the anniversary of his death.
