This Day in Top 40 History: April 7  

April 7 is an important date in Top 40 music history. On this day, Bruno Mars performed in Barcelona during his popular 24K Magic World Tour, and the March Madness Music Festival featured several Top 40 artists. Additionally, the original manuscript of a hit song was sold for a staggering $1.2 million.

In 1985, British pop duo Wham! made history as the first Western band to perform in communist China. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley played at the Worker’s Gymnasium in Beijing, and their trip was captured in the 1986 documentary “Wham! in China: Foreign Skies.” Fast forward to 2017, Bruno Mars wowed fans at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, breaking records with over one million tickets sold in just one day for his tour. In 2024, the March Madness Music Festival took place in Phoenix, Arizona, featuring artists like Leon Bridges, Mumford & Sons, and The Black Keys.

April 7 also marks significant cultural events. John Oates, of Hall & Oates fame, was born in New York City in 1948. The duo achieved great success, landing 29 hits in the US Top 40. In 2015, Don McLean’s manuscript for his iconic song sold for $1.2 million at auction, a song that many from the 1970s know by heart.

Notable performances on this day include Burt Bacharach and Hal David winning Best Original Song at the 1970 Academy Awards for “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” In 1977, Anne Murray sang the Canadian national anthem at a baseball game, and in 1978, Prince released his debut album, “For You.” In 1990, Elton John performed to honor AIDS activist Ryan White.

On April 7, 2020, Billie Eilish canceled her Where Do We Go? World Tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the challenges faced by the music industry.
