This Day in Top 40 History: April 8

April 8 brought some exciting performances and positive interactions among Top 40 artists. It’s great to see musicians supporting one another instead of competing. Bruno Mars and Cardi B celebrated their song being certified Multi-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, while the Jonas Brothers delivered a memorable performance on Saturday Night Live.

This date also marks several fun milestones in music history. In 1989, Roxette’s hit single reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking the first of their four No. 1 singles. The song topped charts in 25 countries and was part of the Look Sharp! album, which sold over 9 million copies. In 2001, Emma Bunton’s debut single hit No. 1 on the UK singles chart for two weeks, making it her only chart-topping song. Fast forward to 2019, Bruno Mars and Cardi B’s collaboration received a Multi-Platinum rating, adding to its impressive accolades. In 2023, Miley Cyrus’s song hit the Top 40 charts at No. 1 and stayed there for 10 weeks, while The Weeknd’s track also reached No. 1 and held that position for 27 weeks.

Culturally, April 8 has seen significant events too. In 1962, Guns N’ Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin was born. In 1963, John Lennon welcomed his first son, Julian, who inspired several Beatles songs. In 2020, Niall Horan praised Taylor Swift during a FaceTime interview, calling her one of the greatest songwriters of her generation. In 2024, Taylor teased lunar-themed lyrics for her upcoming album on the day of a rare solar eclipse.

Notable recordings from this day include Toto’s fourth studio album, Toto IV, released in 1982, and the Spice Girls’ performance in 1998 during their Spiceworld Tour. In 2006, the Black Eyed Peas headlined a concert in a fan-friendly style.
