This Day in Top 40 History: December 18

On December 18, 2011, One Direction, known for their hit “Story of My Life,” performed their first show at the Watford Colosseum in England. They thought it was a failure, but it was the start of their journey to becoming one of the biggest boy bands ever. Before their breakup in 2016, they scored nine U.K. Top 40 hits and 13 singles on the Hot 100.

This date has seen some significant music milestones. In 1967, The Beach Boys released their 13th studio album, *Wild Honey*. The title track reached No. 31 on the Hot 100, while “Darlin’” peaked at No. 19. In 2007, Mary J. Blige dropped *Growing Pains*, featuring Usher and Ludacris. The album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and the single “Just Fine” reached No. 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

December 18 has also marked important cultural moments. In 1964, Sam Cooke’s open casket funeral took place in Chicago, attended by about 200,000 fans. Christina Aguilera was born on this day in 1980, later becoming a pop sensation with hits like “Lady Marmalade.” Billie Eilish was born in 2001 and made waves with her song “Ocean Eyes” at just 13.

The music industry faced changes on this day too. In 2014, Larry Henley, a member of The Newbeats, passed away at 77. In 2016, Fifth Harmony announced Camila Cabello had left the group, leading the remaining members to pursue solo careers.
