This Day in Top 40 History: December 3

Ferlin Husky was born on December 3, 1925, in Cantwell, Missouri. He had a successful music career with hits like “Wings of a Dove” and “Gone.” This date also marks the birthday of John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne. Some of his Top 40 songs include “Mama, I’m Coming Home,” “Bark at the Moon,” and “Changes,” featuring a duet with his daughter, Kelly. Another notable birthday on December 3 belongs to Montell Jordan, the first R&B artist to sign with Def Jam’s Def Soul. He shot to fame with his 1995 hit “This Is How We Do It,” which earned him a GRAMMY nomination in 1996.

Several significant cultural moments also happened on this day. In 1990, Madonna debuted her video for “Justify My Love” on ABC’s Nightline after MTV banned it for explicit content. The video later sold over a million copies on VHS. In 2005, Marilyn Manson married Dita Von Teese in a castle in Ireland, but their marriage ended about a year later.

December 3 has seen its share of industry challenges too. In 1965, during a Rolling Stones concert in Sacramento, a power surge knocked Keith Richards unconscious. Thankfully, he recovered and performed the next night. In 1979, a tragic stampede at a The Who concert in Cincinnati resulted in the deaths of 11 people. Authorities allowed the show to continue, fearing a negative reaction from the crowd. Lastly, in 2015, Scott Weiland passed away at 48 while touring with his band, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts.
